Some Reviews...
Lancashire Evening Post's Article - Lancashire's Top Pubs With friendly staff, a good atmosphere and crucially for the Camra battle chiefs, up to four well-kept real ales, The Black Bull has based its success on the real values a pub should hold, without resorting to fancy revamps or new-look images. A valued and honourable foot soldier for the Camra battalions indeed. (24th September 2011)
Good Beer Guide Entry 2012 Attractive cottage-style inn dating back to the 1800s, which has managed to retain a village pub atmosphere despite its location in a well populated area. On entering, a narrow passageway leads through to a central bar serving a number of drinking areas including a separate public bar. A family-run community pub, the landlord organises many social events in support of local charities. Two guest beers are always available. A Beautiful Beer gold award winner. Other comments The Black Bull in Penwortham, Lancashire is a new GBG [Good Beer Guide 2012) entry and well worth a visit: a proper pub. I sampled the Caledonian Autumn Red which was excellent. There were 6 real ales available. - Dave Hawkins 4th October 2011 (CAMRA website)

Reviews from the past... "Nothing has changed at the Black Bull. The cosy, friendly atmosphere still exists with four small rooms surrounding the bar each attracting its own regulars. My guest assured me that Friday nights are still a squeeze to find a free space to sit or stand as they were way back when! Why change a good thing" - Linda Feb 2004 (bestpubs.co.uk) "I can't expound the virtues of this pub without using superlatives. The beer is always on song" - Bill Jackson July 11th 2004 (bestpubs.co.uk) "Cracking beer, the bar staff know everyone's drink and usually have it waiting on the bar before you have ordered it. The girls who work there look amazing and the lads are the most professional staff I have come across in 30 years of drinking! Please go and snuggle up by the fire with a fine drink..." - Dave, Mick, Tony, John, Jack... September 22 2002 (bestpubs.co.uk) "Friendly village style original pub. Three regular real ales Theakston's Bitter, Theakston's Mild and the hard to find Greenall's Bitter. Two other hand pumps serve a continuously changing Guest beer range" - Peter J McLean 25th March 2007 (beerintheevening.com) Village pub, good beer, very small and cramped, nice clientele... - Rocket 22nd April 2005 (beerintheevening.com)
