70s NIGHT: Saturday 7th January 2012
What a great night, we had to open late! See the photographs on our facebook profile. We excelled with music and dodgy fashion statements from the 70s plus glitter balls. Might have to repeat in future!
CHRISTMAS 2011: Open Christmas Day
We are open 11am until 2.30pm for your pre-Christmas Dinner drinks and for the first time we're open 8pm until 10pm on Christmas Day evening. If there's demand we'll stay open later.
DECEMBER 2011: History page of our website updated regarding Nicholas Knowles (Landlord in 1800s) and Colin Hagger/John Gornall from the 1960s to 1990s.
Thanks to Heather Crook of Penwortham Magazine for information on a past landlord of the Bull in the 1800s - unfortunately he drank too much and died from alcohol abuse!!
Thanks to Stephen Finney for his help regarding the landlords Colin Hagger and John Gornall.

DECEMBER 2011: Final touches to the dart's room and new lighting

DECEMBER 2011: Christmas Decorations
Well Christmas is coming and we've decorated the pub to encourage celebrations over the festive period.
NOVEMBER 2011: Carpet in the Dart's room
Yes, it's nearly 2012 and we think those that frequent the dart's room of a weekend deserve some carpet! We know some people will prefer the old basic tiles and lino but carpet's much warmer and keeps the heat in more. It also allows everyone to spread out a bit when the other rooms are full. Some more furniture will be arriving soon. Hope you like (or don't dislike too much!) It's brighter too!
NOVEMBER 2011: Children in Need night
Quite a calm evening... but raised £70 from the regulars on that Friday.
NOVEMBER 2011: Satellite football reintroduced at the Bull
Following the recent European Court decision allowing us to utilise any EU satellite supplier, we have purchased Viasat which shows many PL matches every weekend plus many during the week plus CL matches midweek - most matches are shows except for 3pm Saturday matches (which are shown later). The weekly games will be published via our facebook site (we can only show one game at once!)
Sky wanted £16,000, Viasat is a more reasonable £2,200! Sky should be ashamed of itself, seeking to take advantage of the UKs pubs and football supporters!

The Bull is delighted to announce its inclusion in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2012 - it's THE accolade for a real ale pub and we're very proud. Many thanks go to the local CAMRA branch for considering us (without our knowledge or input) but a special thanks to Ray Thompson, Bar Manager, for his beer management and the rest of the team for their support. See our current range of beers on our Beer page.

AUGUST 2011: Personal Licence Holders
Most pubs have just the one Personal Licence holder - but not at the Black Bull ! After encouragement from management, we now have 8 managers and staff holding the appropriate BII qualification following a further four staff undergoing a full day's training and examination in August 2011 - entitling them to hold their own Personal Licence. Congratulations to everyone involved.
JULY 2011: Cask Marque accreditation re-affirmed
Ian Robinson, the licensee, has been awarded Cask Marque accreditation for serving the perfect pint of cask conditioned ale. Said Ian "This award is a great endorsement for us. A lot of our customers visit the pub especially for the cask ale and it's really gratifying to know that we are getting the formula right." Backed by 45 of the UK's leading brewers and pub companies, the accreditation is only given to licensees whose ale passes a series of rigorous independent beer quality standards. Just 6,000 out of the UK's 36,500 pubs hold the award.

September '10: Cask Mild has had its day! Cask Mild has been at the Black Bull for as long as anyone can remember but only being available in 9 gallon barrels, it just isn't being drunk fast enough and we are left with half a barrel wasted each week (it only has three days once opened!). It goes against the grain but we're having to swap to keg mild from early September to reduce wastage and keep our loyal drinkers 'mildly' happy. Thanks to all those Cask Mild drinkers of the past, we were one of the last few pubs to have stocked it.

The awards were created by the British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA), on behalf of its members in 2006: brewers and pub retailers, but is now operated by Cask Marque. Just 170 pubs UK wide hold the accreditation! We are the only pub in Preston to hold the award (the nearest other pubs being The Old Leyland Gate in Leyland and the Prince of Wales in Chorley).
